Karak Castle

  • DSC01790 Karak Castle (also Kerak) began construction in 1140 CE. The castle served as a central location to control herders and caravans across the area.
  • DSC01791 A cannon on exhibit in front of the castle. The castle was in use from 1142 - 1917. I'm guessing this cannon was from the end of this period.
  • DSC01793 An arched entrance to the castle.
  • DSC01794 Panoramic view over the valley below.
  • DSC01795 An arrow slit in the exterior wall.
  • DSC01798 Blocks were re-used from existing structures. This wall contains a large block that was once part of a larger scene.
  • DSC01802 The castle was much larger than the remains seen today. The nearby city of Kerak now occupies much of the plateau used by the castle.
  • DSC01803 A large archway, amazingly still standing after so much time and erosion.
  • DSC01804 A flower growing in the castle.
  • DSC01805 A circle of light illuminates a small area of a hallway.
  • DSC01808 Mona backlit by the light entering the doorway.
  • DSC01812 Mona and Chris sitting on the wall of the castle.
